Super Monkey Ball: Step & Roll (also known as Super Monkey Ball Athletic in Japan) is a game in the Super Monkey Ball series released for the Nintendo Wii in North America on February 9th 2010, in Australia on February 11th, in Europe on February 12th, and in Japan on February 25th. It is often considered to be the sequel to Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz.

In this game, you control the monkeys with the Wii Remote or the Wii Balance Board. The gameplay is similar to Banana Blitz as you tilt the Wii Remote to move around. However, you cannot jump in this game. Step & Roll also introduces a new monkey named Jam; however, he is not a playable character until Super Monkey Ball 3D.

Main Game[]

Like any other Super Monkey Ball game, Step & Roll has a Main Game. Like Banana Blitz, you control your monkey with the Wii Remote. However, there is a new feature of using the Wii Balance Board. This game has five different main game modes.

Single Play[]

This is the main mode. Players may choose a world and play each level of that world in order, followed by that world's credits. Completion of this mode unlocks the mirror mode, which can be selected from the pause menu during the startup of a level.

Co-op Play[]

Like single play, but a second player can join in and shoot obstacles. There are more obstacles in this mode.

Marathon[]

Players may choose one of three marathons that contain three to six worlds for the player to roll through without stopping and with only one life.

Practice[]

Players may play any level they have played on in either single player or multiplayer with infinite lives.

Jam Dojo[]

The game's main tutorial mode. Contains one long level teaching you the basics of monkey ball.

Worlds[]

The game has a total of seven worlds. The first three are unlocked by default, and beating them unlocks the next three. Beating all six worlds unlocks the previously hidden, seventh and final world. Each world also has a hidden banana.

  1. Monkey Island
  2. Excavation Site
  3. Chimpan Sea
  4. Far East
  5. Polar Festival
  6. Magma Valley
  7. Siliconia (hidden world)

Mini Games[]

In Step & Roll, there are a total of 21 minigames. Eleven of the minigames are from Banana Blitz, with ten new minigames. Each minigame can be played with the Balance Board and the Wii Remote or the Wii Remote and Nunchuck. An asterisk* indicates that the minigame requires the use of a Nunchuck.

Settings[]

The settings screen has five different options:

Collection[]

The Collection is this game's version of achievements. There are a total of 36 different achievements to get. Seven of these achievements are special bananas that can be found in each world.

Rankings[]

The Rankings allow players to check their records for the main game as well as the minigames.

Replays[]

The Replay section is where players can watch all their saved replays from the main game.

Staff Credits Game[]

The Staff Credits Game section is where the player will be able to play one of the eight credits minigames without having to beat the world or a marathon. The player can also skip the credits by holding the A button for three seconds.

Wii Balance Board Check[]

This section allows the player to recalibrate their Wii Balance Board, if necessary.

Trivia[]

Chiquita-super-monkey-ball-sweepstakes

Promotion for the Chiquita sweepstake

  • When playing with the Wii Remote, instead of the Wii Balance Board, stages become littered with obstacles in order to make the gameplay more difficult. Because of this, speedruns of the game are done using the Wii Balance Board.
  • This game's goal design is a hybrid of the ones seen in the classic games and Banana Blitz.
  • Chiquita hosted a sweepstake where a family could win a copy of the game, along with a TV, a Nintendo Wii, and a Wii Balance Board.[1] Their logo also appears on bananas seen during cutscenes with Jam.
  • The game was promoted on the popular MMORPG Poptropica, in which players would try and collect at least 55 bananas within 60 seconds, and would be rewarded an AiAi costume upon completion.[2]
  • For unknown reasons, this game does not support PAL60, despite the previous game Banana Blitz supporting it. As such, the PAL version always runs at 50Hz, with the entire game running 16.7% slower.
  • The Japanese version of the game reuses the announcer clips from Banana Blitz, instead of the new announcer.
